Arrow Blue Arabesque Empowering Women in Engineering and Technology” colloquium
(WFEO)

WFO COLLOQ 2The Center of Arab Women for Training and Research partnered with the World Federation of Engineering Organizations in the first international Congress for Women Engineers, which took place from the 6th to 8th June 2007 in Tunis, Tunisia. WFEO conference was preceded by a training workshop that focused on leadership skills, entrepreneurship, and networking, which were selected as the three key themes that could adequately address the issue of “Empowering Women in Engineering and Technology”. A host of activities was planned by a special committee for this session, in which CAWTAR was among the pool of trainers, and took the lead of the “Entrepreneurship for Women in Engineering and ICT” track which began the afternoon of June 5th June 2007. CAWTAR was then participating during the colloquium in one of the breakout session entitled “Women Engineers and Technologists: Appreciating your Entrepreneurial Spirit”, during which a presentation was performed on “developing the culture of risk” among potential women entrepreneurs as key element to set up a business successfully. Also, CAWTAR reported on its activities during the “Major National ad International Organizations Supporting Women in Engineering and Technology”, as part of a consortium of partners worldwide such as UNESCO, the International Network of Women Engineers and Scientists (INWES), FI (Femmes Ingénieurs, WFEO, AWO (Arab Women Organization)...

WFO COLLOQParticipating in such first of a kind international initiative towards the empowerment of women in engineering science and ICT enabled CAWTAR to analyse further areas for research, training and networking in order to sustain and build the capacities of women in this domain. Interesting feedback came out of the training session as well as the colloquium concerning the eagerness of women to know more about how to acquire entrepreneurship skills, and the challenge faced by our societies to build the entrepreneurial culture amongst the women engineers, and finally to help them overcome their fear of creating their enterprise. Through the identification of success stories, and encouragement of mentoring, CAWTAR has managed to sensitize women to new opportunities to expand their skills and fulfil themselves throughout entrepreneurship. The combination with leadership and networking sessions allowed the trainees to broaden their scope in terms of perspectives, and acquiring tools to better succeed in their professional lives.
