Third AWDR Arab Women and Decision-Making (forthcoming)
The international community has reached a consensus on the important linkages between women’s participation in decision-making and national economic growth.
Despite the political transformations that have taken place in many Arab countries and their ratification of key international conventions, the participation of Arab women in decision-making is still the lowest in the world.
CAWTAR has dedicated the forthcoming 3rd AWDR to the subject of Arab Women and Decision-Making. To capture the wide and varied topic of decision-making, the Report will examine the reasons why, after strides in education and health, Arab women are excluded from the decision-making processes and positions, and how this enters into all aspects of life for Arab women, from the concerns of daily life to her status at the national level. As such, the report will investigate the prevailing power relations in the private and public spheres to expand the significant, and often overlooked, relationship between private and public which is usually encapsulated by the nature of household choices.
In a fashion similar to the first and second AWDR’s, the 3RD Report will first introduce the conceptual regional understanding of decision-making. Second, it will present in-depth national case studies of six Arab countries (Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Tunisia), and a cursory study on decision-making in the Yemeni family. The analysis of the Report will be based on gender-disaggregated statistics, tables, charts and indicators. Finally, it will provide recommendations for national programs and policies to empower Arab women to participate effectively in decision-making.
The report will be available in English, Arabic and French.
