Media and Communication
CAWTAR has designated the media and communication as one of its major pillars. The media is a dynamic source for promotion and awareness-raising about gender equality and development in the Arab region. The program plays a pivotal role in three ways: it engages the Arab media community in promoting gender equality and development in the Arab region. It contributes through training to reinforce the capacity of the media community to promote positive images of Arab women. Finally, it supports media products based on the Center’s Arab Women Development Reports and its networking activities through partnership with different Arab media agencies.
- Research: to conduct media gender-related focused research on issues raised by published series of CAWTAR’s series Arab Women Development Reports on gender and globalization and Arab adolescents.
- Participation: CAWTAR media program invites members of the Arab media community in all research activities and events organized by the Center and its network @NGED (Arab Network for Gender and Development).
- Engagement: the program encourages contributions by Arab journalists to Cawtaryat, the Center’s quarterly newsletter published in Arabic and English.
- Capacity-building: the program offers training to Arab media staff to develop their own strategies. The Center does this in order to strengthen their skills to analyze regional challenges for gender equality and development in a way that will potentially influence national policies and public opinion.
- Awareness-raising: the media program launches research competitions and organizes seminars for Arab journalists in an effort to raise the caliber of the discussion of gender issues in the Arab media.
